Glenn Beck’s 9-12 Project

Phil Orenstein • March 16, 2009 • Uncategorized

I attended a Glenn Beck “We Surround Them” viewing party on Friday, March 13th together with over 30 passionate American citizens. Over 15,000 attended various venues throughout the country, some boasting an attendance of hundreds of guests. The anger, frustration and passion of these ordinary folks who prior to March 13 were total strangers, promises to blossom into a movement of millions initiated by popular talk show host Glenn Beck’s plan “to renew America and recommit to America’s values.”  I took an interest in this movement back in February and wrote about it here.

After a couple of weeks of recruitment and communications on the Meetup website, we met at a popular sports bar, The Main Event in Plainview, New York. We were all seated around a long table with large plasma TV’s at both ends. All attendees seemed to be good hearted, hard working patriotic folks who cling to their guns and religion. With a passion and energy in the room that was electric, all attendees seemed to realize it’s time to stand up and do something to take back our country. Glenn Beck has captured the stage and he is espousing what many Americans are feeling in their hearts today about our country’s dangerous plunge into collectivism and loss of the fundamentals that made America exceptional.

When I stood up to speak, introducing myself as a Republican and promoting certain candidates for public office as potential standard bearers for disenfranchised American patriots like us, I could sense the overall disdain for politicians and political parties. I got the idea that they have no use for the Republican, Conservative or Libertarian parties or the corresponding labels that define their alleged principles. They see their elected officials and party leaders mostly as petty, self serving, unprincipled charlatans, except perhaps for Rep. Peter King. Nothing I said regarding translating their anger into action at the polls in November, made any sense to them.

This is a snapshot of America. It’s time for the party establishment of all political parties, especially the GOP to wake up to their moral duty to represent and protect the people and our Constitution. Unethical, unprincipled or philandering elected officials, party leaders and prospective candidates are traitors who should be sent to prison for life. They have failed in life and abandoned the American people. Shame on all of them. It’s time for real leaders of integrity, courage and honesty to emerge, and kick out the self-serving frauds from the party ranks.

One person commented on his frustration with Republican indecisiveness in the 2008 presidential elections. They failed in the primaries to nominate Mitt Romney, the finest candidate for the presidency, based on ridiculous fears over his Mormonism. If more sensible heads prevailed upon GOP power brokers, they would have had the sense to see that black liberation theology was a lot scarier than Mormonism. But left with the pathetic choice of McCain, they should have at least distributed millions of clothespins before we entered the polling booths.

The rejection of traditional conservative, republican or libertarian brand identities not only betrayed an abhorrence with politics as usual, but rather conveyed a broad open mindedness and innovative thinking, and might I say revolutionary spirit. Instead of brandishing simplistic labels and tedious “liberal vs. conservative” or “us vs. them” strawman dichotomies which tend to quash critical thinking and cloud mental clarity, they expressed a desire to discuss and debate the issues more broadly and civilly. Moreover they conveyed a yearning to study, discuss and educate others to the core American fundamentals, unveiled as Glenn Back’s 9 principles and 12 values of the The 9-12 Project.

The 9-12 Project is designed to bring us all back to the place we were on September 12, 2001. The day after America was attacked we were not obsessed with Red States, Blue States or political parties. We were united as Americans, standing together to protect the values and principles of the greatest nation ever created.

The Nine Principles: 1. America is good. 2.  I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life. 3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday. 4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government. 5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.  6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results. 7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable. 8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion. 9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.

The Twelve Values: 1. Honesty 2. Reverence 3. Hope  4. Thrift 5. Humility 6. Charity 7. Sincerity 8. Moderation 9. Hard Work 10. Courage 11. Personal Responsibility 12. Gratitude

To my fellow Republicans, I say it’s time to wake and smell the coffee. We should first of all recognize that we don’t represent the people of our communities, cities or country. We failed and should dissolve our party if we can’t do our job. We have failed to communicate our principles and values. It’s time to end the tedious charade of patting each other on the back in a closed circuit mutual admiration society. To my new found friends at the Plainview viewing party, I have some thoughts.

Yes of course labeling ourselves anything is a thought-stopping process which hampers critical thinking about the issues. Yet the key issue that unites us is to take action to save our country, our liberties and the free market from encroaching collectivism over the individual. Put a frog in boiling water and he will instantly jump out, but put him in cold water and slowly increase the heat to a boil and he may remain in the water and die. The decline that’s occurring today is reminiscent of the “future shock” of the Carter years where some of us remember waking up one morning to an era of stagflation, misery and loss of faith in America. We were in boiling hot water.

Today the water is heating up for the taxpayers with an out-of control government dealing massive mortgage handouts and bailouts to irresponsible lenders, borrowers, failed banks, corporations and automakers, a $787 stimulus package with an additional $410 billion spending bill with over 9000 earmarks, $ trillions more to subsidize special interests, social programs and radical causes, including $900 million for Palestinian scholarships, and the temperature rises on a daily basis. Instead of waiting for the water to boil, we should jump out of the pot, grab our boots and march to Capitol Hill with pitchforks and torches to tar and feather every diabolical usurper who voted for these reckless spending bills.

But the energy and frustration unleashed from such movements as Glenn Beck’s 9-12 Project to Tea Parties all over America should be more than a flash in the pan in reaction to an incompetent socialist chief executive. If this movement is to turn into something revolutionary and long-term, it needs to be translated into effective action. Every one of us should read Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, organize and train ourselves in the same way socialists, marxists and radicals of the past generation worked within the system to become teachers, lawyers, journalists, judges and politicians, in order to make legislation, influence policy, wield the reins of power, and elect the officials who represent their objectives. Just look at the result in such notorious figures as Dennis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, John Kerry, John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Cynthia McKinney, Nancy Pelosi, and most of all Barack Obama. Look at the professors running amok in radical political causes who populate the universities, the liberal journalists who monopolize the media, the soulless lawyers who serve themselves and who ultimately become politicians and lobbyists.

Now we the people need to work within the system to promote the American principles we cherish – the 9 principles and 12 values. One immediate objective to translate the energy of We Surround Them into action needs to be finding and developing the true American patriots to run for public office who represent the voices and values of good hearted American citizens. Then we should focus on these standard bearers, rally the public, and launch campaigns in order to elect them to city, state, congressional and executive office.

The civil rights marches represented merely the match that lit the fire, but without passing the civil rights legislation it would have been a flash in the pan and would have died with the murder of Dr. King. But LBJ and Bobby Kennedy passed the legislation that made civil rights for blacks the law of the land. “The change of the 1960’s came from the top down, not from the counterculture or the protest marches, but from government, acts of Congress, presidential leadership and the opinions of the Supreme Court.”*

In the same manner the patriots of the 9-12 Project should take effective action in order to produce real change in our country. We need to find the great American patriots, returning war Veterans, individuals of true integrity and character to represent our voices in government and write the legislation that will prevent our nation’s destruction. This is not rocket science. Drilling now for oil, closing the border, passing e-verify (which lost by two votes!), stopping the bailouts, lowering taxes, building nuclear power plants, auditing the Fed, to name just a few, are some of the major issues on our wish lists that will not be accomplished with marches alone. Once we find the candidates who will fight for our wish lists, we must take the Glenn Beck 9-12 revolution to the polling places and campaign for these standard bearers and get them elected, the same way the hordes of community organizers learned the Rules for Radicals, took to the streets, staged massive rallies, concerts, meetups and events and elected Obama to the presidency and his minions to Congress. America is a Republic, a representative democracy and the major issue for all citizens is taking action to get the right candidates elected to represent the values and make the laws to steer this country toward free markets, liberty, and victory over encroaching Islamic tyranny.

Great slogan for young Americans….No Child Left a Dime!I am hoping to go to a tea party rally in Ct. on Sat. The Acorn bus tour of AIG employees homes is a disgrace…did no one consider the possible dangers imposed on the private families living in those homes? Robbery, home invasions, harrassment , children being involved???? Is this the US? Thanks for your effort.

I wonder when the twenty somethings get the message

that nothing is free, that is only for washington

and crooks. Life is what you work for,not what is giving

to you as a hand out. That is for big labor, congress, and

    big business.

  3. PHYLLIS SHANNON on March 25th, 2009 6:24 pm

YOU ASKED ON YOUR SHOW WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED IN OUR COUNTRY. I AM WITH ALL OF THOSE WHO THINK IT IS WAY PAST TIME FOR TERM LIMITS FOR THE CONGRESS AND THE HOUSE. ONE OTHER BIG PROBLEM I SEE IN WASHINGTON IS LOBBYING. I UNDERSTAND IT IS PROTECTED BY THE FIRST AMENDMENT BUT WITH THE UNCEASING QUEST FOR CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS BY OUR POLITICIANS, CASH FROM LOBBYIST’S HAS DISTORTED OUR POLITICAL SYSTEM AND THIS NEEDS TO STOP.

  4. Bill Silinski on March 26th, 2009 10:12 am

The Pre-amble to the Constitution outlines what our government should do and what it only should do! More people should read it and think about it. Keep big government out of out lives!

  5. Roger Waldron on March 26th, 2009 3:09 pm

Make all Judjes elected positions with term limits including the U.S. Supreme Court. Term limits for Congress. One six year term for President. Strict Constuational rules. Right to life for the unborn. Seal the bourders from illegals with military and with force. Cut Unfair taxes.

You ask what it is we would like to see changed. First of all to let you know, I have seen much adversity in my life. Lost my job after 28 yrs at age 48, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and type two diabetes, and three knee surgeries later…went back to school learned a great new successful trade, and I am giving back as a Coast Guard Auxilliarist helping out the regulars(Gold Side). I am now 55 years old, I have seen alot, but the one thing that scares me most is the indoctrination of our kids in school. I have a 17 y/o daughter on her way to college. When she encountered the bias as a HS senior thank God she had the intuitiveness to ask questions of us. Knowing her estuteness I instructed her to do what she had to in order to get good grades while knowing all the while that she would not compromise her principles and would be true to her real beliefs.
Its not education anymore at any level, its indoctrination. I experienced it myself 35 years ago in college,it hasn’t changed, only intensified. We need to recapture the minds of our youth. Reteach those conservative values that will serve them and their families much better in their futures. Glen, nothing else matters if we don’t change this! They are our future!!

ITS TIME TO MODIFY HOW WE SELECT OUR CONGRESSMEN. APPOINT THEM FROM EACH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT WITH STRICT RULES, NO CRIMENAL HISTORY, MUST PASS A TOP SECRET BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION.1 3 YEAR TERM NO RETIRED PAY, ONLY SOCIAL SECURITY LIKE MOST AMERICANS AT LEAST 29 YEARS OF AGE AND BORN IN USA. AND CAN BE OF ANY RACE.

    We need to reclaim America

We need common sense in government.

If we don’t have the money we can’t spend it.

We need a flat tax (this would take care of the cheaters large and small)

We need to kick out our elected officials who sell out.

We need to elect Rush Limbaugh, Shan Hanity, & GLEN BECK
all to be top officials, not in order of importance.

  9. Joan Orr on March 26th, 2009 7:51 pm

Dear Mr. Beck, You showed some puzzlement about what this new public service mandate was going to do. They will become the smoke police, the fat police, the garden planting police, etc. They, in short, become the attitude inspectors who report us to the government, local or federal. Government snoops, all. I suggest you read _Firefox,out of the gray zone, by Claire Wolfe. This will give you an idea of what Nannygov can be if we do not stop it now. Heads up, America, we are about to be buried by liberal cowards! I love your show, Joan

1 Only 12 months for campaigning.
2 Campaign funds to be provided by the government, and limited to 50 million per candidate.
    3 Term limits–Pres.2-4year;Senator 2-5year;Congressman 2-3year
4 All lobbiests must be registered and pay a 10 million fee.
5 No politician may make a change in a law who has not been dully elected. The courts may
    only interpret the law.
6 Candidates must state facts when speaking, and if elected may not change position for one year after being elected.

    That’s enough for now.
    Bob

George, your concerns regarding education are heard right here in the public school system. There are many of us in the system who are horrified by the brazen ignorance that prevails among our co-workers and we work daily to undo or at least to keep the harming influences at bay. I have 30+ years as an educator, the last 24 of which I have been working as a counselor at the elementary school level. My job is obviously involved with working with problems that affect how children function in school. These concerns inherently lead back to the homefront. I have witnessed a continual disintegration of family structure for many years along with the mindset that the government ought to fix everything. I have seen confused and damaged children who have been exposed to every definition of family under the sun. I have heard and seen the “history ” lessons that many of our young twenty something teachers deliver. I have experienced the government mandates that make it impossible for good teachers to teach. I am exposed to the idiotic blatherings of union reps and the complacent, empty-headed, PC , politcking of board members and administrators. I fear we have an entire new generation of “un- educators” who will soon take over the ducation establishment. It is about much more that testing for math, science and reading levels. It is aboutteaching our children about living as a productive member of a free and just society. We are in trouble.

    Glenn, THANK YOU!

Your 9 principles and 12 values are the goals we should all strive for. I believe the only way we will ever achieve them is to divest ourselves of labels. This attitude of “If he/she is not a Rep.,Dem., Liberal, Conservative, etc.” I can’t support them. Forget the “Party” vote the principle. If the Apostles had felt that “Party” loyalty was more important than principle Christianity would never have survived. Learn who you are supporting, study their history and actions, don’t be “Sloganized”. I’m reminded of an old Robert Redford movie “The Candidate” which may have been the birth place of the Obama campaign.

    Later, John

Thank you all for your thoughts on the Glenn Beck Project. He has captured a raw nerve in America today and the giant is awakening. I especially share the concerns of George and Bonnie on the pathetic state of education which entails more of an agenda driven indoctrination, censorship and speech codes, rather than imparting the core values of America. I attended a Meetup tonight in Plainview NY with over 40 people and we planned a Tax Day Tea Party at the Hicksville Post Office. The feeling in the room was echoed in John’s comments above regarding the 9 principles and 12 values and to “divest ourselves of labels.” The result was to moblize on Tax Day 4/15 to educate the people filing their income tax returns at the last moment, on their fundamental rights that are now being taken away by an out of control gov’t.

I love the fact that I am an American, but i have to be honest, I cannot say now that I am happy to live in america! I just wish that the Obama administration with all of his crooked appointees would just disappear! We need to stand up as american’s and take back our country that the founding fathers started for all of us. Long live the Constitution!

Term limits at the Federal level & the Fair Tax. That should fix about 95% of our current problems.

I would Like to do something but I do not know what. I am probably not a good guy to run for office, because though I believe in serving, I do not believe in the sucking up required for election. If some one wants me to be in office it will be because they elect me not because I ran for it. I shall do my best to raise my children to be responsible citizens and try to set the example by refusing to live in fear of what talking heads and politicians say. I will do what I can to stand for what I believe in, which is well stated on this web page. If I find some other way of helping I will do that as well. One of my goals that is presently dear to me is to make people understand that we are the government, those in Washington or the state houses or even in the city or county seats are but our employees and are expected to live up to our standards, if they cannot then they too can be fired. If the people will but remember this, those who claim to lead will stop with the bloated speeches and attend to the tasks which the people and the constitution demand.

  23. Anthony Ragnone on April 7th, 2009 1:00 pm

We most definitly should band together and push hard for the enactment of the “FAIR TAX” and term limits.

We have all got to pull together to stop this! It is slowly creeping in and we’re all too busy trying to stay afloat financially to pay attention! Wake up America before we loose our country! I am a criminal justice/political science major at the University of South Alabama. I just wanted to say that men like you Mr. Beck are the reason this country has lasted for its 300 + years. I hear so much Liberal bull in such wide variety that it makes me red in the face with anger every day I go into class. Last semester we had a girl stand up in class and beg us to join a gay rights protest, but yet they cancel class on the day of tea party WHY ! because they know that the conservatives far out weight the liberal freaks and they do not want to hear anything that is decent and right. I hope that soon all these fools who are riding the Obama Cool Aid ban wagon realize the error of their ways. When they realize their costly Error then we the Christian conservatives (right wing extremists )Have won. for all those out there supporting the project remember that God is the King of Kings and has toppled many dictators and nations alike. so we must pray for our nation . We as a Christian nation have sat back too long and allowed a corrupt government to destroy the very values that we as Americans live by and are still very very proud of.

    Have a nice day
hope all this makes sense I tend to ramble on when I find something good to talk about……..

SORRY! As Al GORE would say, the debate is over and its been decided.

I believe Al Gore bears out the point debate is dead. You can not debate people whose primary goal and purpose is to take away your freedom, impose upon you their ideology and to enslave you. Nikita Khruchchev, one in a long line of those who wish to bury you, put it in a way that is not hard to understand and their vision should cause you great concern as some of our present day political leaders are students of these beliefts and in openness and in great haste are putting into place

what the tea parties was all about they all were interested in Obama and not about the people at all
the Media and the goverment should listen to the people that put them in office. We put them in office and we can take them out.

Our current President and Congress really does not care about the citizens of the US, if the did they would listen to the Tea Party and start reversing some of the garbage in acted by this regime.

How long is the House and Senate going to let the Obama adminstration continue the tactics of EXTORTION, COERSION and RACHERTIERING? That is what these tactics are threatening the bond holders with letting the WH press core destroy their reputation if they don’t take the $.29 on the dollar and then giving the UAW over half of Chrysler.

Forcing bank to take TARP money even though they did not need it, what kind of adminstration do we have.

I guess it is correct “You can take the organizer out of Chicago, but you can’t take Chicago out of the organizer.

These tactics are the same that the mafia and la cosa nostra use.

Section 8 of the flag code says our flag may be flown upside down in cases of dire distress. As our country is now in very dire distress in many ways because of Obama, many are going to do just this out of respect and fear for our nation, our freedom ,our constitution ,and our very way of life. Our freedom of speech, and faith in God and adherence to the truth of His word is also under the obama attack.I started flying my flag upside down per. code 8 today and It is my hope that millions of us will as this visible action will shout the seriousness of the situation and that we are keenly aware of the dire situation in our nation . If you decide to do this it is important that a small sign of some sort be placed citing the authority ( section 8 of the flag code ) and that it is done because our nation in great distress. Small blank yard signs can be purchased at sign shops , and you can use a marks a lot to letter your small sign. I have also printed up a small letter that I place in the mail box at all locations where I see our flag being displayed. The note basically gives the same information that I have placed here. This gives other concerned americans a chance to do something now that will speak loudly. We will fly them that way until obama is gone.

What the hell is going on???? Pay czar???? How about we put a pay czar on the Government. It’s their spending thats out of control, not ours. I have had it with this whole administration and their thinking that they can “Robin Hood” us. This is absolutely ridiculous. People who have money, have it for a reason. THEY WORKED FOR IT!!!! Maybe they didn’t work for it by digging ditches or building houses but they did work for it. Maybe they just put their minds to a different use than “the rest of us”. Isn’t that supposed to be the greatest thing about America? We all have the same oportunities as the guy who lives in the Mansion on the other side of town. We may not always take the opportunities that we should to get us there, but the opportunities do knock on our doors the same as they knocked on the rich guys door. If we don’t answer that knock we have no one to blame but ourselves. How dare anyone in this country be upset for someone else getting rich when they aren’t!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

  39. Debbie Robberson on June 16th, 2009 2:22 pm

We, hard working Americans, are all tired of this “Robin Hood” style of governing. Entitlement is for the people who work to become entitled to something, not the people who have their hands out and who cry that they have been given a raw deal in life. We all have to play the hands we are dealt and the successful ones of us, play those cards without always expecting the dealer give us a more and better cards. If the people of America don’t wake up soon, there will not be a free America to wake up to or in. We are in serious trouble people and we are doing nothing to change it. Take a stand and let’s keep America the greatest country in the world.

This is my evaluation of the 9-12 Project Meet-up last night in Ft Worth (6/11/09)

I believe the last 2 speakers were great—& they both have a good handle on the direction we need to go.
There was almost no one there younger than 40….wonder why?
Myself & younger people want to know how to defeat the enemy & what we can do to do that—
I thought there was way too much emphasis on GOD & not enough on country. For many of us & especially the younger people—we don’t need the God part—but are VERY interested in the same end result—-getting BHO & his cronies out of office.
My suggestion is to not repeat the same mistakes of the Republicans….they bowed to the Religious right & lost….I see 9-12 going in the same direction.
IF you want to win—start focusing on the disenfranchised & apathetic voters…there are a great many who feel this way & they will make or break the campaign.
First–loose the religion & the band, and the hand waving——they were BAD. I felt like I was at a “Holy Roller” religious meeting……This is not the time or place for this. Lloyd Marcus was the type of entertainment that will work–Promote America, & Freedom—not Religion. The “preacher” from Dallas was great—he focused on winning against the enemy—for his kids & grandkids…this is the direction we need to go with the 9-12.
Focus on getting the message to people who can make a difference instead of only the ones with “likes” that are the same as you.
Ronald Reagan was a great man & president, but he is dead & most of the prospective voters now do not even know who he was…..but a great many “believe” in his principals.
I think it would be good to go after the people who grew up on MTV—-the rest of us already vote against BHO.
There were several of us in my group & all of us are in agreement on these precepts. How do we get the younger people involved? The present 9-12 venue is NOT going to do that. You have to go after the people who voted FOR BHO—they are the ones who might have Christian values, but do not necessarily the same as you. We all know where the church is—-we will go there IF we want Religion….
Just a simple Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, & sing the national anthem will suffice before we get to the business at hand. If I want entertainment—I will go somewhere else for that.
I only have a set amount of time to devote to our common cause—-last night I feel that I wasted at least 1/2 of my time on useless fluff that should have not been a part of the program.

  42. Yvonne Birnell on July 25th, 2009 10:58 am

We can’t leave out religion. It is the founding of this great country. That is what we are standing up for. Our rights given to us from our Creator. Just leave out the bullshit of you have to do this or that to get those rights. They have already been given.

  43. Steve Spencer on August 13th, 2009 12:06 pm

I remember that years ago the government “borrowed” money from the Social Security Trust Fund ( Medicare)..
with the uncommitted money from TARP/ Stimulis/Bailout/(guess we need a new name for the program), can they pay back the money they borrowed?

You guys are idiots. keep voting against your own best interests and you deserve what you get: pollution, health care that might as well be non-existent, people ripping you off, a craphole world for your children and grandchildren. i hope you are smart enough to finally figure out how you are being manipulated. glenn beck is part of the whole operation. you have been duped my friends and you are a hazard to the rest of us.

  52. Susan Sherman on September 14th, 2009 12:27 am

Glen Beck – you are nothing but a ball-baby – dumb a– lyer. Grow up Glen, Don’t you realize that you are twisting people into viscous protesters for your own personal gain and ratings. You are doing these people a great disservice. You, Mr. Beck are no better than Charles Manson or Jim Jones. You pick on the feeble minded and you mold them into something you can use. What is your next project – getting them to kill for you or all die from drinking poison? You should be ashamed of yourself. You are no christian – how can you say that you are and spew this hatred. You are the biggest hypocrite I have ever encountered. Carma, Glen – what goes around comes around and your time will come.

  53. Melvyn Steele on September 15th, 2009 1:37 pm

STOP THE GOVERNMENT….don’t know what else to say. There is just too much crap to cut through. No one can watch it all, but if your paying attention then it should be pretty clear, some treasonous crap is going down and the people must grab the rein’s….My beloved countrymen, regardless of political bent, can you not see the difference between where we were, and where we are now? What has happened to the United States is just crazy. I can hardly believe it. PEOPLE OF A LIKE MIND MUST COME TOGETHER, left/right…red/blue, dosn’t matter. Most evenly derived mind’s can agree on what is right and what is a deception…. But soon….they must do it SOON.

I responded to each one’s inquiry with the following suggestions to join the 9-12 Project and find a local Tea Party group:

Try this for the 9-12 Project

Also to find a group near you try these websites:

Next Thursday 4/15 is the big Tax Day Tea Party at local venues throughout the country. I’m sure you’ll find one near you.
    Enjoy!
